In 10th January 2021 episode of the podcast On the barricades, Maria Cernat and Boyan Stanislavski discussed the situation in the United States with the leftist journalist and filmmaker Paul Jay. He is the founder and host of The Analysis, previously he was the CEO and senior editor at The Real News Network.
The events that took place on January 6 in Washington were definitely a symptom of the American political system and the collapse of its culture. On the one hand, everybody was horrified; on the other, however, no meaningful questions were asked as to what actually brought about such an incident. Also, it seems that the Americans finally had a chance to get a sense of what their governments have been promoting around the world for decades, from Ukraine to Venezuela.
The mainstream media have played a particularly disgusting role in the entire spectacle. Not only have they been promoting Trump in 2015 and 2016, hoping that he’d lose the race, but they then promoted all kinds of weird conspiracy theories to shy away from responsibility for the political outcomes of their PR games. After four years of propping up insane, conspiratorial narratives and crafting one emotional/moralistic hype after another, what effect could it have had other than a bunch of aggressive far-right lumpens releasing their impulses and storming the Capitol?
And all this is happening in the middle of a deadly pandemic that has exposed the obvious barbarism of the American system, particularly with its lack of state-managed and non-profit health-care system.
What are the prospects for the empire?
